Selling a car from your driveway
As codified through Aug 20, 2020; verify current rules with the City at garfieldhts.org. This is general information, not legal advice.
Chapter 1370 generally prohibits parking a vehicle to sell it or putting a "for sale" sign on it — with a limited exception for residents.
The exception (1370.02(b)), all conditions must be met
- No more than two vehicles in any 12 months, only one at a time, and no more than one in any six-month period.
- Parked on a hard-surface driveway at least 10 feet from the street (50 feet in non-residential districts).
- Not on the tree lawn between sidewalk and curb, and not on the front yard.
- You must own or lease the property.
- Displayed no more than 90 continuous days.
- No more than two signs, together no larger than two square feet, attached to the vehicle.
Violations are a fourth-degree misdemeanor, and each day is a separate offense (1370.99).
Selling safely
- Meet buyers in daylight; bring someone with you for test drives.
- Accept cash at a bank or a cashier's check you verify with the issuing bank.
- Sign the title only at a title office or notary, and keep your plates.
